EOTO 2: Five Eyes

EOTO 2: Five Eyes

Security and privacy are essential things that all humans desire. We want to be kept separate from the masses; our lives are private, and no government or organization should be allowed to keep strict tabs on what we are doing without our consent. Five Eyes intelligence alliance is an intelligence community that is tasked with protecting democracy and stopping terrorism, but at what point does that reason cross a line and how can we keep them accountable.

First, we have to know what Five Eyes even is. Five Eyes intelligence alliance is considered one of the most powerful intelligence-gathering and sharing organizations in the entire world. They are comprised of five countries (fittingly): the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. All of these countries have access to vast amounts of information gathered from satellite imagery, electronic communications intercepts, and human intelligence sources. Through collecting all of this data, each country provides information on matters such as national security, counter-terrorism efforts, and cyber warfare.

They were founded in 1941 during a secret meeting between British and American codebreakers. Although they didn't officially form until after the war, they have had a massive impact on many major political events since their inception. From World War II, to the Cold War, the War on Terror, relations with China and Russia, to even events such as the Boston Marathon bombing, Five Eyes has collected vital data and has aided in our safety and well-being.

Because of their far reach and access to so much data, they have been instrumental in providing early warning of potential global threats.  They have provided critical insight into potential hazards such as natural disasters, cyber-attacks, and pandemics. The alliance's intelligence-sharing capabilities have helped to mitigate the impact of such threats, enabling countries to take proactive measures to prevent significant loss of life and damage to property.

The alliance has faced criticism for some time, with concerns raised over privacy and civil liberties violations. The alliance's intelligence-gathering capabilities have raised concerns that member countries may be engaging in mass surveillance and indiscriminate data collection, with some individuals questioning whether such practices are legal and ethical. Regardless of how much good they have done for the United States as well as the world as a whole, it is our job to be skeptical and ask important questions. Should they have as much power as they do and do they even have the right to collect as much information as they do, especially when it comes to monitoring private citizens? One of the key dangers of the alliance is its potential to undermine the individual privacy of all citizens. Because of their immense power and widespread reach, they are able to collect vast amounts of data from a variety of sources, including electronic communications intercepts and human intelligence sources. The collection and analysis of this data could potentially lead to violations of privacy rights, especially when the data collection is indiscriminate and not subject to adequate oversight and accountability mechanisms.

It all comes down to one thing in the end, how much reach should the Five Eyes have? How far into our lives, and our privacy, should they be allowed to look? It is true that they have done a great job and provided priceless data on potential disasters, but we as citizens also deserve a certain level of privacy. I like to say that the way it should be is that the people should know everything and the government only what is necessary, but instead, the people know nothing and the government knows everything,
